It's A Poem 'Cause I Can't Sing

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, here's a copy of the lyrics to a song I wrote. Being that I can't sing, I'm currently just calling this piece a poem. I'm working on a shorter version should there be any interest in using the song. You folks of my generation in Brownwood, Texas and surrounding area should be able to identify with it, as should baby boomers everywhere.
Scattering Of Memories
By Terry Beck
I remember Red Rover, making kites with paper and twine
Playing in cardboard boxes, building tents on the clothes line
We fought to be King of The Mountain, made castles in the sand,
Built forts , tree houses and lived in a dreamland.
We ran barefoot and carefree with nothing to dread
'cept goathead stickers, red ants and time to go to bed.
I Remember my first dog and the day he was lost,
First bike, first gun and learning how much it cost.
Now that I'm living in the Autumn of my life
So many things done and still so much to do
My needs are simpler and I'll be okay
Just don't take my memories away.
We wore Flat Tops, Penny Loafers and white Levi jeans
I remember my first car, cassette tapes and 20 cent gasoline,
Sitting at the Dairy Maid watching the day go by,
Drinking shakes, eating burgers and bar b q fries.
Friday night football and all the pretty girls
All dressed up, wearing ribbons and curls.
Teen Timers, my first girl, we pledged to never part,
First kiss, first love and my first broken heart.
Now that I'm living in the Autumn of my life
So many things done and still so much to do
My needs are simpler and I'll be okay
Just don't take my memories away.
We listened to the Juke Box and The Midnite Riders
We all belonged to groups, insiders or outsiders.
We all cried the day The Music died
We sang Fire & Rain by Sweet Baby James' side.
I remember the thought of becoming a man.
And the loneliness of change as changes began.
The hugs and kisses of Mom, trying not to be sad,
Along with the handshake and hidden tears of Dad.
Now that I'm living in the Autumn of my life
So many things done and still so much to do
My needs are simpler and I'll be okay
Just don't take my memories away.
We were in school the day John Kennedy died,
We sang Abraham, Martin and John and cried.
Too many wars, some fought and some did not
Too many of both died, all for naught.
I remember my true love, I asked her to be my wife.
Pig tails and ponytails, our girls were the joy of our life,
Weebles, Cabbage Patch Dolls, Hopscotch and Jump Rope
Coming home to snaggletooth smiles, butterfly kisses and a new hope.
The years passed too fast and our girls were gone
They were Blessed with kids of their own.
Shopkins, T- Ball, XBox and songs of rhyme.
No distractions, nothing but time, we'll do better the second time.
Now that I'm living in the Autumn of my life
So many things done and still so much to do
My needs are simpler and I'll be okay
Just don't take my memories....Don't take my memories away!
